Top Tiguan Sales, Routan
The 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan, its name derived from tiger and iguana, features European styling and handling in a compact SUV format.
Built on a platform shared with the Rabbit and GTI, customers are often surprised by the performance of its 200 hp TSI turbocharged engine, said consultant Dustin Reed. The 2-liter motor employs direct injection technology for high performance and fuel efficiency. Earlier this year, it was named one of Ward’s 10 Best Engines in the Audi A3.
Westside sold more Tiguans than any other U.S. dealership in May, and expects the vehicle to continue to draw interest. The SEL model was the most popular early on, with its available power sliding Panoramic Sunroof with power sunshade.
The high line SEL competes more closely with similar sized models from BMW and Acura while the base model and SE is set squarely against compact SUVs from Toyota and Honda. “People are looking for something to bring the dogs and kids in, but they don’t want to lose that fun to drive aspect from VW,” Reed explained.
Fuel economy in front wheel and 4Motion all-wheel-drive automatic configurations is 18 city, 24 highway, and the compact SUV can tow 2,200 pounds.
The compact SUV market segment is growing, said Reed, and VW wanted to bring a strong offering.

The 2009 Routan minivan is the first VW minivan on the scene since the Eurovan of the 1990s. It’s also the first VW with available DVD entertainment. First arrivals are expected in September, and the vehicle is being produced in Ontario.
Customers who order before August 31 are eligible for a $1,500 child college savings contribution.
North American manufacturing is expected to lessen turnaround times for special order deliveries to six weeks or less. And, consultant Maura Broucek said the vehicle is very price competitive, ranging from $24,700 for the S model to $33,200 for the top of the line SEL.
All models carry Volkswagen’s Euro-Tuned Suspension, front and side curtain airbags and VW’s luxurious interior trim.
