First TDI Arrives
The long awaited Clean Diesel 2009 VW Jetta TDI announced its fuel miserly presence at Westside on June 26.
The demonstrator car, a Loyal Edition automatic in Campanella White, elicited many questions from sales consultants, who underwent extensive training on the car, which is putting popular hybrids on notice.
TDI’s in the U.S. have had a three year respite, and return to Westside in August, in four door and wagon formats.
Higher prices for diesel fuel have some reconsidering the TDI advantage. Truth be told- the numbers still favor the diesel.
Diesel fuel is 20 to 25 percent more expensive than gas, but achieves up to 40 percent better fuel mileage. This, coupled with its simplicity of design, there are no spark plugs and no distributor, make the TDI a hard act to follow for cost of operation.
VW has taken cost savings a step further by offering the car for about $2,000 more than similarly equipped gas models, said consultant Dustin Reed. Previous generation TDIs sold for about $3,700 above gas powered Jettas.
